SYRIA: Damascus's Mezzeh Airport to Be Repurposed for Private/executive Aviation
DAMASCUS, Syria
- The Syrian government has started work to convert Mezzeh Air Base, an air base located in Mezzeh, south-west of the old centre of Damascus, from military use to a limited civil airport for private and business aviation, the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport said.
- The authority said the revamped aerodrome would complement Damascus International Airport in plans to develop the country's civil aviation sector.

- Initial work covers debris removal and rehabilitation of air-navigation infrastructure, plus the technical, operational and regulatory steps needed to reclassify the base for civilian use. Mezzeh features a 2,800m-long runway 06/24.
- The work is coordinated with national institutions and the National Commission for Missing Persons.
- Sites suspected of holding mass graves or human remains will be handled under approved procedures to preserve evidence and remains and to protect the rights and dignity of victims.
- Technical, operational, environmental and regulatory studies are still being completed, taking account of the surrounding area and the expected traffic.
- Once completed, authorities will reclassify Damascus Mezzeh airport as a limited civilian facility specializing in private and executive aviation.
