MUSCAT, Oman
- Oman's Mach Aerospace International (MAI) and Indonesia's GMF AeroAsia are targeting a combined investment of OMR 25.4 million Omani rials (USD 66 million) for aircraft maintenance, engineering training and component manufacturing.
- The aircraft structural components factory accounts for OMR 12.6 million (USD 33 million) of the total.
- GMF AeroAsia signed a concession with the Oman Civil Aviation Authority, and an agreement with MAl, at the authority's investment forum.
- In October 2025, SalamAir signed a 10-year memorandum of understanding with MAl for a wheels and brakes workshop at Muscat International Airport. SalamAir supplies the specialised tools while Mach Aerospace builds and runs the shop, for SalamAir and other carriers. Preparatory work there is underway.
- An aviation engineering academy is also under development, with phased implementation from 2027. It will deliver B1 and B2 training plus specialised structural and systems programmes.
- The structural manufacturing project needs 12 to 18 months after final requirements are met. The first phase covers CNC machining, sheet-metal fabrication, selected structural parts and subassemblies, surface treatment, non-destructive testing, metrology and tooling.
- The wheels and brakes centre will first serve Omani airlines initially i.e. Oman Air and SalamAir, then expand to the GCC, Middle East and African markets.
- Certifications targeted include European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 145, Part 147, AS9100, NADCAP and ISO 9001, subject to scope.
- GMF AeroAsia is a Garuda Indonesia group company whose MRO work dates back to 1949. It was spun off as a separate company in 2002.
