TRIPOLI, Libya
- Transport Minister Mohammed Al-Shahoubi announced an ICAO decision that lifts prior aviation safety warnings for Libyan airspace issued in 2013 and 2015.
- The Libyan Civil Aviation Authority said ICAO had stipulated in its letter, dated October 23, 2026 under No. (AN 13/4.3.OPEN 26/76), that it had cancelled its circular issued on January 15, 2015 under No. AN 13/4.3/Open-15/4, which included a notification and a warning to airlines and international institutions and which also imposed precautionary restrictions on transiting and operating in Libyan airspace.
- The decision marks a national achievement in restoring Libyan airspace status on the international air navigation map.
- Libya upgraded airport infrastructure and navigation systems over the past several years to regain international confidence.
- Libya will launch a promotion programme for its airspace to global airlines to encourage resumption of direct flights and use of the Europe-Africa corridor.
- The decision is expected to increase overflight traffic, boost air transport activity and raise related revenues.
- The development offers an opportunity to strengthen economic, tourism and investment activity.
- Libya will continue work with international bodies to lift remaining restrictions on Libyan carriers.
- The achievement opens a new phase to develop civil aviation and restore Libya's regional and international role in air transport.
