NASIRIYAH, Iraq

- Iraq's Minister of Transport Wahab Al-Hassani met the head of Dhi Qar Provincial Council Azza Al-Nashi on Tuesday.
- The pair discussed latest developments at Nasiriyah International Airport (XNH/ ORTL) completion and development road routes in the province.
- The capital of Iraq's Dhi Qar Governorate, Nasiriyah lies on the lower Euphrates, about 360 km south-southeast of Baghdad, near the ruins of the ancient city of Ur, as well as the recently established Ur Tourist City located adjacent to the archaeological site.
- Al Hassani and Al Nashi discussed the need to complete requirements to develop air transport services, support passenger traffic and economic activity, and attract investments to Dhi Qar.
- As of August this year, the former airbase turned Nasiriyah airport was 68% complete, with an expected delivery in early 2027 under accelerated work schedules.
- Technical milestones include upcoming equipment deliveries and factory acceptance tests in China for navigational and ground systems.
- Jointly developed by China and Iraq under the Belt and Road Initiative, the project involves international firms like Turkey's Kiklop Design Hertz Insaat and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, aiming to boost tourism and trade in southern Iraq.
- As a key aviation project in southwestern Iraq, Nasiriyah airport comprises a main terminal building, a VIP terminal, a hotel, an air traffic control tower， runways, an apron and associated supporting works. Upon completion, it will become an aviation hub in southwestern Iraq.
