CAIRO, Egypt
- The Egyptian Airports Company has renewed the aviation safety licenses for Aswan International Airport and Assiut International Airport.
- The renewal is valid for three years until 2029 and followed inspection by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority.
- Aswan International Airport (ASW/HESN) is situated roughly 16 to 20 kilometers southwest of Aswan city in the far south of Egypt. It primarily serves the Aswan Governorate and the broader Nubian region, acting as a hub for Upper Egypt's tourism sector. Its commercial focus centres on international and domestic tourism, primarily Nile River cruises, local historic landmarks, and connecting flights to the Ancient Egyptian temples of Abu Simbel.
- June through August historically marks Aswan's quietest operational corridor when, due to the intense summer heat in southern Egypt, leisure tourism downscales significantly. However, traffic began rebounding rapidly heading into late September and October, supported by a regional Cabinet initiative extending free emergency entry visas at Aswan to boost arrivals. Earlier in the year, Aswan maintained an active baseline, handling 98,435 passengers across 963 flights in April 2026 alone.
- Assiut International Airport (ATZ/HEAT) is located about 20 to 30 kilometers outside of Assiut city along the desert routes of central Upper Egypt. It serves the Assiut Governorate and surrounding agricultural communities in the Nile Valley. The airport's commercial focus is on regional labour transit, primarily offering direct international flights that connect local workers and residents to major economic hubs across the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan.
- Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation figures show Assiut, along with nearby Sohag Airport, recorded significant growth during the peak summer labour transit months of August and September 2026. Combined, the two regional Upper Egypt airports handled 222,445 passengers, an 18.6% year-on-year increase compared to the 187,497 passengers during the same period in 2025. This spike was heavily fueled by seasonal expatriate worker transit to and from the Gulf countries.
